Is Facebook actually relevant to my business?

Monday, April 5th, 2010

facebook1 300x300 Is Facebook actually relevant to my business?

The short answer, Yes! I challenge you to come up with an industry that could not directly benefit from some type of Facebook campaign. This quick post will outline why Facebook is relevant to all businesses and will describe the types of campaigns available.

My business partner, @Alex Shaffer, came across the Facebook statistics page Easter morning (happy easter by the way!). Some of the statistics were really startling, but all of them pointed to Facebook being a powerful tool to reach people: This includes your business reaching people too.

According to Facebook they have 400 million active users. Active means they login at least once a month. Of these users, 50% of them login every day. The average user writes 25 comments each month. User’s upload 5 billion photos each month. So the answer is YES, Facebook is relevant to your business.

Now we can look at the real question… How do I leverage Facebook for my business? You are at the right place to find these answers.

The first place most companies should start is creating a Facebook page. It is free and easy to setup/manage. Navigate over to the Facebook advertising page to create one now.

What to focus on when setting up your page

  • First, Update the info tab. Let people know what you do in a 30 second or less read
  • Photos: Upload a few photo albums. Include pictures of your location, employees, and products. Industry photos are appropriate as well. Example: If you are in the business of selling racing memorabilia perhaps you could have an album dedicated to famous Indy 500 crashes.
  • Do you have a blog? The website Networked Blogs runs a Facebook app that automatically syndicates your posts. This lets you get the ideas you are dying to share with the world… out to the world!  The important thing to remember is that different people like to access their content in different ways.  Example: Books.  With the help of technology some prefer to read their books as ‘e-books’ online or even on a portable reader such as the Kindle or Ipad.  Others prefer hard back books or large print books.  Doesn’t it make sense to give your users the option to choose how they get their content (and its free for you!)?
  • Publish your Facebook page. So you have finished setting up your Facebook page and it looks pretty darn good. Its time to share it with the world. Don’t forget to use the suggest to friends link. We have found including a personal message such as, “Please subscribe to help support my company’s page” significantly increases conversion rates.
  • Respond to comments! When people interact with your page be sure to respond. People like to talk, but people LOVE to talk when they know someone is listening. Responding can be as simple as letting them know you are here and you will keep their suggestions in mind

Ok so you now have a page and a few followers that interact with your page on a regular basis. Great! You are on the right track. You’re now ready to jump into the Facebook advertising game.

Facebook advertising is a great platform. It is affordable, effective, and manageable; however, where it really ads value is its state of the art targeting system. Before we delve into the details lets catch everyone up to speed on how Facebook advertising works. Facebook advertising is similar to other PPC (pay per click) services such as Google Adwords. The process is simple, you select a demographic you are targeting, create an ad, and select a payment type. You can either Pay Per Click (.10-2.00 per click, usually 20-50 cents depending on demographic and ad type) or per 1000 impressions (dependent on demographic).facebook2 300x225 Is Facebook actually relevant to my business?

Where Facebook really ads value is its targeting system. It really is state of the art and offers advertisers a powerful platform to serve their ads. Understanding the system is dependent upon understanding the information users provide to Facebook. Users provide their age, residence, interests, political views, relationships (romantically and family), religions, gender, sexual orientation, work history… the list goes on.

So what does this mean for advertisers? It means we can accurately target ads to an unprecedented level. Let me offer an example from my profile. Lets say an advertiser is working for a client who is releasing a slightly popular conspiracy novel (I’m thinking conspiracy novels like Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code). The advertiser knows that straight males, aged 18-55, with at least some college are most prone to buy his book. There are over 5,000,000 people, just in the USA, who fit these demographics.

Our advertiser does not have the budget to advertise to millions of people. He needs to make every penny count. If we target those demographics + only people with Dan Brown as an interest we are down to a more realistic 16,800. The best part of all: everyone of those people have expressed interest in conspiracy novel books.

Facebook advertising can become a very hands on process. Finding a reputable company with experience and expertise in Facebook advertising could ease your process. You should expect straight forward explanations, like I have given above, that show HOW Facebook will help your business. Generally you should expect to receive weekly, monthly, or quarterly reports about your advertising campaigns.

Social Networking for Business (Part 3/3)

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

As you may remember in our previous post, Social Networking for Business (Part 2/3), we talked about the myths of social networking, spamming, and the differences between a personal relationship and a business contact.

In this post we shall discuss and give a few suggestions, pointers as to how you can publicize your business through a social networking forum to add value to your work. The foremost thing to do after signing up for a forum/site to enhance your work is to let people know you exist.

social3 250x300 Social Networking for Business (Part 3/3)There is a need for you to generate adequate traffic to your community, blog or website so that your target audience and the potential target audience may know what you have to offer. The following ideas will help in achieving this goal.

1 – Send an Introduction Email

It is always a good idea to send a letter of introduction to your contacts and connections letting them know why you are there and what do you are offering. This cannot only be done with professional contacts but the same can be sent to friends and family. Whenever you send this email to your audience be sure to outline the benefits to them for reading it and point out that they can subscribe to your community, blog via email and RSS feed. Also, be sure to ask them to share it with their friends and families and anyone who can benefit from it.

2 – Social Media

Try participating in multiple social networks. If you are on facebook for example you could also use it to market your email marketing services. It’s important to present yourself in a friendly yet professional manner, although social networking allows you to be a lot more casual than you should be on your website and blog, which tends to make people feel more comfortable and create trust. Also, use Facebook to place direct links to your site and blog. Some professional networking sites such as Linkedin and Ecademy provides greater opportunities to connect to like minded people and present yourself for creating and enhancing your business opportunities.

3 – Forums

Contribute to forums. Visit forums and online communities where the topic of your most recent blog or your field of discussion is under-discussion, and where it’s appropriate, add your own comments. Just make sure that whatever you contribute is of value. Don’t just drop in and make some inane comment just to get your name out there.

4 – Newsletter

Include information about your community, website and blog in the newsletter you send to subscribers. You could also create a display advertisement that readers could click on to get to your website and/or blog.

5 – Signature

Create a signature file with a link to your website, community and blog and include it with every email you send.

6 – Article Directory

Write a series of articles and submit them to the top article directories. This is an excellent way to become known as an expert in your field. Articles need to be good quality, informative and approximately 400-700 words in length. Be sure to include a brief one or two sentence paragraph about you with a link to your site or blog at the end, and if the article directory will allow it, include one or two relevant links in the body of the article.

7 – Sharing Useful Information

It is always helpful to share useful business site with your contact and clients. This would help in deriving traffic to your site. Also, uploading important and useful articles proves to be a good technique for sharing information and increasing knowledge base. Cross referencing information at different forums can help you gain attention and bring in more business.social4 300x246 Social Networking for Business (Part 3/3)

Social Networking for Business (Part 2/3)

Monday, January 4th, 2010

social1 Social Networking for Business (Part 2/3)In continuation to our previous post, Social Networking for Business Part (1/3), we discussed why is there a need for social networking and the added advantages it can bring into your business, in this post we shall discuss about a few myths and risks which might be involved when networking for business and how to address them successfully.

Myths, Risks and Preventions

The first and foremost myth is about wasting time online, especially on networking forums. Where I can agree to a certain extent that it can be, provided your objectives for joining a network are not clear. Before joining any forum pen down at least three to five objectives why you wish to be on that particular network. Be specific about it, meaning do not have vague objectives. Next make them time-bound and measurable; i.e. how soon and how you wish to attain that particular objective – just keep in mind that whatever objectives you set are realistic and achievable within the time-frame you wish to achieve them.

Another one is of spamming. If you have joined a network with an intention to promote or market your product then the opposite can be true meaning that you may be spamming people on various networks to gain attention and mark your existence online. All good professional networking sites now have checks and balances to monitor spamming, such as Facebook and Linkedin. Unwanted emails and unwanted contacts can very easily be ignored as desired. Adequate security settings can be set to prevent unauthorized or unwanted viewing to one’s profile in a social networking forum.social2 300x229 Social Networking for Business (Part 2/3)

Many have apprehensions before opening an account on a social network – mostly deriving from fears of invasion to their privacy. Where many good professional sites have privacy settings in place it is always advised to be careful while joining a network. Confidentiality contracts while signing up for such forums have strict rules and regulation safeguarding ones interests. Also, checks and balances for viewing one profile and exercising control on which information is to be viewed by which audiences can help address this concern for many. This helps in avoiding fake and unreliable contacts.

There is also a need to determine the difference between a personal contact and a professional one. It is advised to maintain different directories for both. However, many professional networking sites and forums are there for professional networking per se – all the social networking forums provide a core bases and ground work for an establishment of initial online presence leading to building a small business/professional community for your expertise. Adding more people to your particular community strengthens your presence providing means for attracting more people and increasing the effectiveness, or reach, of your online web presence.

Having one community can trigger creating multiple communities and bridging them all for more business opportunities, hence increasing business visibility and existence on multiple platforms. The power of multiple minds at work can help build a niche through networking and online marketing, opening more avenues for further business explorations, thus enhancing revenues.
